Turkey is situated in an area which tends towards pleasant, mild climates. However, Turkey’s unique landscape results in smaller micro-climates of differing weather – something anyone buying property in Turkey should bear in mind, particularly when choosing between regions. Climates and temperatures can differ dramatically between the seven regions of Turkey.
The coastal regions of Turkey tend to enjoy mild, balmy climates, while the inland Anatolia plateau has hot summers, cold winters and limited rainfall.
Around Turkey’s capital city of Istanbul and around the Sea of Marmara (otherwise known as the Marmara Region) the climate is very moderate. Winters have temperatures of around 4C, while summers have average temperatures of around 27C. Along with being a busy, populated area, with high appeal to tourists, this warm climate makes Istanbul a wonderful choice to buy property in Turkey for a second or retirement home.
In Western Anatolia, otherwise known as the Aegean Region, warmer temperatures can be found. Winters in the Aegean Region have average temperatures of around 9C, rising to 29C at the height of summer. The Mediterranean Region, along the southern coast of Anatolia has a similarly Mediterranean climate, something which some people looking to buy property in Turkey may find appealing.
The Black Sea area, otherwise known as the Black Sea Region, has a wet, warm, humid climate, with average winter temperatures of 7C. Summers in the Black Sea Region average around 23C.
In contrast to this, the Anatolia plateau, otherwise known as the Central Anatolian Region, has a steppe climate, with a widely differing temperature between day and night. The temperature, as a general rule, is cooler than other regions, with average temperatures of 23C in summer, dropping to -2C in winter, with little rainfall and more snow than many other regions of Turkey.
It is in Eastern Anatolia and South-Eastern Anatolia where you will find the coolest temperatures. Both regions have long cold winters, with snowfalls from November to April. Average winter temperatures in Eastern and South-Eastern Anatolia are 13C, rising only to 17C in summer.
As a general rule, most people visit Turkey between June and September, and you will find prices inflate to match this demand. Depending on the region you wish to visit, you may wish to choose a different time of year in order to travel to view property in Turkey in the most economical manner possible.
